Help Save Tarpon Springs Middle School

Tarpon Springs Middle School logo with spartan emblem.

Established in 1962 and located at its current site since 1980, Tarpon Springs Middle School has welcomed tens of thousands of students through its doors and into its hallways and classrooms. For more than six decades, this neighborhood school has been a cornerstone of the Tarpon Springs community, providing generations of children with outstanding educational opportunities. Today, as an “A”-rated school with strong athletic programs and nationally recognized extracurricular activities, Tarpon Springs Middle School continues its longstanding tradition of excellence.

What is happening to Tarpon Springs Middle School?

The superintendent has recommended that the Pinellas County School Board permanently close Tarpon Springs Middle School at the end of the current school year. We believe this proposal is deeply flawed for many important reasons, and now is the time for our community to make its voice heard. Tarpon Springs Middle School has a long and proud legacy of providing quality education to generations of local children, and we must work together to ensure that legacy continues for generations to come.

The School Board will vote on the recommendation Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Please make your voice heard and let the School Board know that closing Tarpon Springs Middle School is not the right choice for our students, our families, or our community.

What will happen to the current school if it is closed?

  • The superintendent has also asked the board to permanently close Tarpon Springs Fundamental Elementary.  If approved, beginning in the 2027-2028 school year a K-8 fundamental school would begin operating on the TSMS campus.
  • All students currently attending or zoned for TSMS would then be zoned for Carwise middle school in Palm Harbor which is approximately 8 miles away.
  • Students currently attending Tarpon Springs Fundamental Elementary would then continue school at the current TSMS campus through 8th grade.

Why is it important to keep Tarpon Springs Middle School open?

  •  Children deserve access to high-quality, local educational opportunities at every stage of their development. Eliminating Tarpon Springs’ only middle school would take away a vital community asset and deprive local families of an important educational option close to home.
  • Combining two middle schools would create significant challenges for students, families, and the community, including overcrowding, increased transportation demands, reduced community involvement, and fewer opportunities for students to participate in sports and extracurricular activities.

Is a K-8 Fundamental school really that bad of an idea?

Fundamental school admission is determined through a tiered lottery system rather than traditional neighborhood attendance zones.  With a limited number of available seats, a fundamental school cannot serve the broader community in the same way a neighborhood school can.  As a result, the vast majority of local families would be unable to access this educational option.

  • High Pressure: The heavy homework load and strict rules can feel rigid, stressful, or inflexible for many students and parents.
  • Community Drain: When highly engaged and education-focused families leave traditional neighborhood schools, it can reduce parent involvement, community support, and valuable resources available to the broader student population. This can create a cycle in which neighborhood schools lose some of the very families who help strengthen and support them.
  • Lack of Access & Diversity:  Investigations (such as those by the Tampa Bay Times) have pointed out that application and lottery systems, combined with a lack of provided district busing, can make it harder for single parent, low-income and minority families to participate, sometimes leading to reduced demographic diversity.
